Those who are familiar with Unix commandline tools like grep, sed and cut will know about the enormous power they provide. They make it a breeze to mangle, transform and retrieve information in and from text files. Unfortunately, they’re mostly dependant on row and column based information. That is, they expect each line in a […]
I use my Debian GNU/Linux laptop both at home and at work. Sometimes I may take it over to a friend’s network so I can show him some stuff. Unfortunatelly, being on a bunch of different networks does pose some problems. When I’m at home for instance, I’d like my firewall to block incoming FTP […]
Back in the good old days, Freshmeat.net was the source for getting your daily dosis of new Free Software/Open Source Linux programs. A single visit a day would keep you up-to-date on the lastest important software releases in the Open Source community. Freshmeat’s target audience has always been hard to describe. In the beginning it […]
NOTICE: Please substitute all occurences of the text ‘1.1’ in this article with ‘1.5’. The reason? They’re skipping v1.1 and going straight to v1.5. Shfs is a simple and easy to use Linux kernel module which allows you to mount remote filesystems using a plain shell […]

Open Source Web Design is a community of designers and site owners sharing free web design templates as well as web design information. Helping to make the internet a prettier […]
Cool site: Debian-Administration.org This is a simple weblog which is designed to contain interesting and useful information related to the System Administration of Debian GNU/Linux systems. Whilst there are several sites where users can post questions and have answers contributed by other users there are no other sites on the web which are specifically targetted […]
This article on News.com is pretty funny. Is it just me, or does this article make it sound like some major scandal was uncovered? It’s friggin’ foxgate! :-) The open-source Firefox browser and Thunderbird e-mail client will be updated for the second time in a week because of code changes that have unintentionally stopped some […]
Hm. Yesterday I wrote about X.org entering Debian Unstable. Turns out though that it’s still causing a lot of conflicts. So far most notably with Xine and various display libraries. Better wait a while before upgrading to X.org. More information about this problem on slashdot. Update: The totem-xine problems and probably many other related to […]
